Vet Suggestion Guinea Pig Teeth That Do Not Line Up

Hello Madison,

I’m not sure what you mean by “don’t line up together,” but overgrowth is the most common problem that guinea pigs have with their teeth. Unlike ours, their teeth grow throughout their lives. This works very well for them in the wild where they are constantly gnawing on rough food and materials in their environment, but in captivity, we tend to feed them a soft diet and not provide them with enough to chew on in their cages. The result is overgrown teeth that, when bad enough, can prevent affected animals from closing their mouths fully and eating properly.

A veterinarian should be able to determine whether this is what is truly going on with a physical exam, trim back the teeth if necessary, and make dietary and environmental recommendations to prevent the problem from recurring. The Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians has a search tool on their website to help owners find a local veterinarian with experience treating pets like guinea pigs.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
